| EXTRA Character Name: Mihael "Mello" Keehl Series: Death Note Gender: Male Age: Nineteen Species: Human Sexuality: Opportunist Manhattanite or outsider? A Manhattanite; Mello was asleep in his own world's version of Manhattan before the attack took place. He awakens to the sound of the first initial explosions, suddenly finding himself trapped in a slightly altered version of the city. | |||
| APPEARANCE Make no mistake, Mello is the sort of person who prefers to be picked from a crowd of people, no matter how gaudy his style can be. On a fairly regular basis, he's all leather-on-leather and buckles over zippers, the transgressive characteristics of his personality effectively showing through like a swollen sore. To add to the mess, he'll usually have weapons on him somewhere: a knife strapped to his thigh, a gun under his belt -- he gets creative. But the most significant aspect of his physical stature would have to be the scar. The burns, stretched from shoulder to scalp in one long line of anguish, failure and defeat, poisoning him down to the bone. He doesn't hide it, but he doesn't wear it like some kind of trophy, either. It's there. It's a part of him. That's it. Overall, Mello could consider himself 'pretty' if he so chose, but somewhere along the way that 'pretty' guise morphed into something rash and dangerous and terrifying. With choppy blond hair grown out to his shoulders and dark, gleaming, almost-green eyes, he uses his image to intimidate. He's of average height -- five-feet six-inches -- and is less 'lean' than he is 'bone-thin', because despite his addiction to chocolate, Mello has managed to remaine underweight. Health doesn't seem to be his utmost priority at the moment. | |||
| PERSONALITY Possessing an explosive, reactive, match-to-a-fuse sort of personality, Mello isn't as easy to read as he likes to trick people into believing. There's a neck-deep well of insecurities and doubts beneath his hardwired exterior of self-confidence and narcissism, and as soon as you think you know him, he has the aggravating tendency to turn everything all on its head. Right there, right then. Unpredictable and rash, Mello follows his instincts with frightening brilliance. He's less logical and more automatic, intuitive, loving the capture almost as much as the chase. Any challenge he'll accept, and any challenge he'll refuse to lose. It all comes with the job, the successor to the world-renowned L, and Mello can't afford failure. He doesn't take defeat easily. As a result, he is a natural-born sore loser. With an inferiority complex too obsessive to be at all healthy, Mello lives off of the high of accomplishment. He wants to be the one to succeed L, he wants to be the one to take the world by storm. He won't settle for anything less. Of course, circumstances of his history have made it increasingly difficult to reel in his volatile nature when it's most crucial to survival, and, inevitably, he began to stack one bad habit on top of another on top of another, the weight of it caving over him like a thousand stones. He's the guy that'll take the risk when no one else seems willing. | |||
| ABILITIES Experiences throughout his life have given Mello an uncanny advantage with weapons like guns and knives, and, specifically, explosives. He can wire a bomb with little error, can even detonate it when the chances of failure outweigh the chances of success. He's got nerves of steel to go along with deft fingers. No matter the consequences, so long as it gets done what needs to be done Mello will persevere, and he's rather talented when it comes to weaponry in general. Materialistic aside, Mello also has a knack for getting what he wants from other people, no matter what it is. He's good at twisting words, good at manipulating the unsuspecting, and especially good at taking the lead in any situation. He may not be a very friendly person with the weapons he carries and the cruel look of his eyes, but he can certainly charm someone into thinking so. Mello is adept at handling the more sociable events, carrying conversations seamlessly and weeding information out of the informants, as well as instructing the most stubborn, independent individuals into doing what he tells them to. Case in point. | |||
| WEAKNESSES Ruled by his hot-blooded temper, there are a lot of things that Mello can miss. Even simple things, because he relies less on logic and more on chance. He isn't incredibly rational, choosing to fuel his own fire rather than douse it when it gets out of control. Mello puts too much emotion into his decisions, puts too much sentiment into the actions he takes. This makes him much more prone to faults than if he were to think things more thoroughly and discard his personal attachments, but Mello has chosen to purposefully push away any likeness he may have had with Near, his self-proclaimed rival as a child. As far as physical weaknesses go, there isn't much he can't do. Although Mello is relatively strong, his mind is his main cripple. After the explosion which produced the scar he now bears, Mello lost some of the more coordinate aspects of his body, such as perfect eyesight and perfect balance. But the fact remains, and he makes do with what he does have. | |||
| HISTORY Little is concrete when it comes to Mello's background, specifically his childhood, but it is understood that he grew up as an orphan in Wammy's House, an orphanage located in England. Wammy's House is quite different from your run-of-the-mill orphanage, however; it's based off of the construction of one man, Quillsh Wammy, who created the home as a way of educating extremely gifted, talented young orphans. The main focus of Wammy's is L: L is a detective as well as a title that the orphans of Wammy's are all working to inherit. Of course there would naturally be children better than others, children better suited for the title, thus creating a sort of climb toward the top where those lacking necessary attributes get caught on the low slope downward. At the very front is Near, closely followed by Mello. The eternal rivalry (if considerably one-sided) between these two starts there. Mello hates anyone who is better than him at anything, and after being bested by Near in a number of things -- mostly tests and exams -- he'd come to resent the younger boy. Near was the obstacle between him and L, and Near's detached, indifferent attitude toward him didn't seem to help matters in the least. Things at Wammy's suddenly come to a screeching halt with the death of the current L -- at least, they do for Mello. It's a private matter only Near and him are told about, but Mello, having been rather attached to the older man, is unable to deal with the news. He demands to know who L chose to succeed him, but is told that 'there was no decision', and it would be better if him and Near worked jointly on the Kira case, the same case which L was killed trying to solve. Mello, however, is completely against the very prospect of collaborating with Near; he wants to beat Near himself, wants to gain the title alone and for himself. Thus, after promptly declining in a flurry of raw anger, Mello leaves Wammy's. For good. | |||
A lot of time passes. Light Yagami continues to work on the tail-chasing case to hunt down Kira, or rather, himself, while also continuing to judge, and not many noteworthy circumstances happen. The next time Mello resurfaces is with careful plans to kidnap and forcefully keep hostage first the Director of the Japanese Police, and then a member of Light's family -- Sayu Yagami, Light's younger sister. This time Mello is backed by the Los Angeles Mafia itself, a strong alliance he seemed to have built up over the past six months. Through tedious endeavors and threats against Sayu Yagami, Mello manages to acquire the Death Note -- the weapon with which "Kira" is using to kill and the police had managed to confiscate. Subsequently, Mello meets this Shinigami Shidou, and uses him as a tool against those targeting him. Things do not go according to plan. Light's father soon acquires the Shinigami Eyes, thus allowing him to see the real names and lifespans of everyone he looks at -- including Mello himself. The Task Force infiltrates his men's base, Shidou becoming useless after a conversation with Ryuk (the Shinigami of Light's Death Note), and proceed to take over. After Light's father gets his name, intent on writing it down in the notebook while standing right in front of him, Mello waits until the Yagami Police Chief is shot in the back by one of the men who was believed to be dead but had only been faking it, lying on the ground nearby and within reaching distance of a loaded gun. Of course, the rest of the Task Force are right outside the door, and in a last ditch effort to defend himself, Mello makes the entire building explode. Light hits a dead end; he has Mello's name, but his father, having died in the hospital shortly after, was unable to write it into the notebook. More time passes. Mello goes MIA, seemingly alive after the explosion because a body was never found, but nothing is ever proven. Mello has slipped away from Kira. In reality, Mello is gaining back his power. He was put at a hefty disadvantage after the Mafia he'd been working with was destroyed. It isn't long until he finds himself in Manhattan, searching for some sort of plan to get him where he wants to go, keeping tabs on possible allies... That was before the attack happened, before Manhattan is sealed off from the rest of the world -- a world he is no longer familiar with. mun | game | Link | Link | Profile |
